effects of the treaty
The Treaty of Portsmouth brought about an end to the Russo-Japanese War. It allowed both countries to rebuild themselves. However, there were problems for both countries. When the Japanese people learned that they would lose half of Sakhalin, a very important fishing area, they rioted and hundreds were killed. The Russian people saw the treaty as a loss for them, and blamed this loss on the government. Partly due to their frustration with the government's failures in gaining Russia a good result from the war and subsequent treaty, the Russian people would soon force Czar Nicholas II from power in the October Revolution.
