THESIS The Russo-Japanese war was a consequence of both Russia and Japan escalating conflict. The war caused great losses to both sides, but neither Russia nor Japan was willing to admit defeat or show weakness. Peace was only possible through the intervention of the United States, a neutral third party whose intervention opened the door to compromise. This intervention allowed both sides to save face, and led to the end of the war.
