All sides wanted a treaty for different reasons. The Russians wanted an end to the Russo-Japanese war so they could rebuild their economy. The Japanese wanted it so they could gain land won in the war, and to end their economic problems due to the war. The U.S. approached both of the countries because it did not want the Russo-Japanese war to escalate any further. The treaty allowed all three countries to achieve these goals.
